Break the tabboo, let go of the social myths. Periods are Not Weird. They are Natural. Period.

I’ll start by being honest here. I was nervous about writing this post.

When Always reached out to me to partner with them on their #ShapeMyInfinity campaign, I was a bit apprehensive at the idea of talking about something so private and guarded. How could I talk about periods and pads – my dad reads my blog!

I come from an extremely modern family (by Indian standards), yet our society taught us things that baffled me. There are stringent norms such as being forbidden to enter the temple or touching the water jar when it is that time of the month. When you went to buy pads from the store, they were wrapped in newspapers – God forbid someone sees you carrying a packet of sanitary napkins. While things have definitely changed and come a long way since, there are still parts of India (and many other places in the world) – where something as natural as menstruation is staggeringly stigmatized.

Growing up, I would ask my mom, what is the logic behind being forbidden to go to the temple. Or why is our cousin who lives in a rural part of India is banned from entering the kitchen during her period. Mom and I both agreed that some ancient traditions are illogical but we can always speak up and help change the dialog for this and the future generation. I was nervous about talking about this topic on my blog but I did what I do when I am unsure about things. Talked to my dad! He said, why not be a part of this conversation? Why not use the platform to have a dialog about something so important? Why not create whatever little awareness you can about importance of feminine hygiene that is lacking and more importantly, ignored? Why not speak about this with pride and break the taboo that the society is engulfed with?

I am absolutely impressed by the campaign that Always is running. I so relate to it as the woman on the go. As women, we embody so many roles. We are synonymous with bringing life to the world, being mothers, home makers, career women, business bosses, working out, running marathons, planning trips for the family! We go full steam 365 days a year, 24 hours a day! We do all of this, also while on our periods!

We have a lot on our plate and period protection should be the least of our worries. How many times have we had to back out from a sport or a trip because … umm that time the month. The discomfort, the constant need to go to the bathroom to check or change our pads…ladies, we’ve all been there! Having given birth recently, I feel this even more. There is so much – I mean SO much your body endures when you give birth. And then you are thrown in territories you haven’t chartered before – taking care of a baby, breastfeeding, changing diapers and having sleepless nights. Let’s not forget the period flow that came back with a vengeance. It was a kind of flow that I hadn’t experienced before and for some, it lasts for weeks.

As a mom and also that woman on the go, products like Always Infinity are game changers. Allowing you to feel more confident during the period. It is made from a one-of-a-kind FlexFoam™ material that absorbs 10 times its weight in liquid, protecting you for up to 10 hours. When I’m running around or going about my busy day, the Zero Feel experience is a true blessing because it molds to your body and you can barely feel it. Always Infinity is aimed at helping women dominate every step in life ensuring that this once area of life is COVERED!

It feels so liberating to talk about this topic here with you guys. I think that if we stop treating this topic as a taboo, it will be a positive step in changing the outdated norms. Our society is going through a big shift currently. Topics that were considered off-limits are being discussed and given importance. Let us stand for issues we believe in and stand against myths we want to abolish. I invite you to open up and freely share your experience as well, let me know how you’re going to #ShapeYourInfinity and you’ve give the world’s first foam bad a try! You can stock up on Always Infinity at BJs.

A big Thank You to Always Infinity for partnering on this post

READING TIME WITH ZOE - OUR FAVORITE BOOKS ( AT 18 MONTHS )

When I was pregnant with Zoe, I would call my mom with questions about being pregnant, about her experience and stories about raising my brother and I,  and all the million questions that a pregnant/new mom would typically have. I specifically remember asking her how did I learn to love books so much? How did they imbibe the passion for reading in me. To which mom had said – you can’t teach your kid to be passionate about something but you give them the tools, encouragement and set an example.
