Things we took for granted earlier, we truly value them now.
Like weekend getaways. A quick load of essentials, stuffed into a weekender and jetting off somewhere far, yet close. Exploring destinations close to the backyard. Those have always been my reprise after long continuous tiring weeks. Never giving much thought, spur of the moment plans, to discover something new or simply for dolce far niénte.
Getting the vaccines felt like a huge milestone. A reward for patiently staying indoors and a ticket to step out, with caution nonetheless. We snuck away to Martha’s Vineyard. Having only gone there for day biking trips in the past and not steering much from the bike paths, I was excited to spend a little more time on the island.
The adventure starts with ferrying away from the city. Zoe has announced to pretty much everyone she has come across in the last few days that she went on a big ship. We took our cars because you’ll be surprised how much stuff you need ( or you think you need) when traveling with kids. Imagine the excitement of a child as the car rolls right onto the ship.
We had to do some research about getting to the island, so sharing here if you are planning a trip. We took the Steamship Authority ferry from Woodshole to Vineyard Haven. If you plan to take your car on the ferry, book in advance because the car slots are limited.
We stayed at the Winnetu and it was the ideal property with kids in tow – rooms opening into the expansive lawn and a frog pond, private access to the beach, heated pool, packed picnic lunches, beach kits complete with blankets, chairs and toys. Everything you could need for a leisurely day has been planned for.
There are also summer camps for kids on the property to check out farm animals or go on fire truck rides, giving parents a break.
And the best avocado toast you might ever taste.
Talking about food, food on the island was amazing. So many places with vegetarian options and fancy drinks. Let me share a few that I loved – add them to your list for when you go.
Sharky’s Cantina – Mexican food and delicious mango margaritas
Town Bar and Grill – go for the pesto pasta, mac and cheese fritters. Stay for the scorpion bowls
Dunes – Amazing breakfast with an amazing view
Edgartown Pizza – Late night takeout. Perfect for a movie night sprawled on the couch.
Waterside Market – pick up sandwiches, coffee and dessert for the ferry on your way back
Martha’s Vineyard is just like we read in the quintessential summer novels. Beautiful homes surrounded by white picket fences, windows lined with flower boxes and manicured front yards with overflowing hydrangeas. Upscale and quaint at the same time. A classic.
